A Knife Is More Than a Tool, It's a Lifelong Companion

Let's talk about knives.

Not the latest trend or the newest gadget, but the simple, dependable tool that has served mankind for thousands of years. When I make a knife, I don't just think about the steel, the shape, or the finish. I think about the person carrying it and what they'll ask that knife to do.

Having spent most of my life in the mountains of Colorado, I've come to believe that a good knife is one of the most valuable tools a person can carry. In my opinion, it's just as important as a fire starter. Whether it's a flint and steel or a modern ferro rod, fire and steel have been at the center of survival since the beginning of time.

A knife's obvious jobs are easy to list. Processing game. Preparing food. Cutting rope, cordage, and other materials. But I also believe a knife should be capable of much more. It should be strong enough and dependable enough to serve as a tool for personal protection if circumstances ever demand it. You never know what situation you may find yourself in.


What continues to amaze me is that despite all of humanity's technological advances, the knife remains one of the oldest and most useful tools ever created. Thousands of years later, we still depend on it.


Colorado Steel Meets Florida Humidity

For most of my life, I lived at elevations around 11,000 feet in Colorado, where the air is dry and rust isn't something you think much about. Then I moved to Florida.

That was an eye-opener. In Florida, it seems like everything rusts just being kissed sitting there. The humidity changes how you think about steel, maintenance, and knife design. That's why I now consider the environment where a knife will be used when selecting materials.


I love tool steels. They are tough, capable, and perform incredibly well. In Colorado, they're nearly ideal. But in a coastal environment, they demand more attention and care. That's where steels like MagnaCut have really impressed me. They offer excellent corrosion resistance while maintaining the performance characteristics serious users expect.


That doesn't mean I quit carrying tool steel knives in Florida. It simply means I take care of them. A little wax on the blade goes a long way toward preventing rust and discoloration.


The right steel isn't just about performance. It's about matching the tool to the environment.


Why I Trust Fixed Blades

Another thing you'll learn about me quickly is that I prefer fixed blades over folders.


This summer I completed a 500-mile hike through the remote Colorado, Montana, and Idaho mountain ranges. Throughout that entire journey, I carried a fixed blade.

Why?

Because reliability matters.

When you're deep in the backcountry, you don't get to stop by a store if something breaks. Fixed blades have fewer moving parts, fewer failure points, and greater overall strength. They are designed to work when conditions are harsh and failure isn't an option.

I've often joked that if the world ended tomorrow, two things would probably still be around: cockroaches and a good fixed blade.

I never leave home without one.

Built to Last Generations

One thing I hear often in the knife world is that a knife is "built to be passed down for generations".


I appreciate the sentiment, but I sometimes question whether that's actually true.

Many modern knives are made with thin blade stock. That's fine for certain applications, but after years and years of sharpening and hard use, there's only so much steel left.

I approach things differently.

The knives I build are typically made from steel that's between 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch thick. Yes, thicker steel costs more, but it also creates a tool that can withstand decades of hard use. These knives are designed to work, not sit in a display case.

When I talk about a knife being passed down, I mean it. I want my blades to be used, abused, maintained, sharpened, and eventually handed to the next generation.

The Most Important Factor: Heat Treat

Ask most knife makers about steel, and they'll gladly tell you what type they use.

The more important question is: How was it heat treated?

In my opinion, heat treatment is the single most critical aspect of knife performance.

A perfectly chosen steel can perform poorly if it isn't heat treated correctly. Edge retention, toughness, wear resistance, and overall durability depend heavily on proper heat treating and tempering.

That's why I consider hardness so important. I want customers to know exactly what they're getting, which is why I mark the hardness in HRC on my blades. It's not just a number. It's a reflection of how the steel was treated and the performance you can expect from it.


A knife that won't hold an edge isn't much of a tool, no matter how beautiful it looks.


How Do You View Your Knife?

For me, a knife isn't jewelry. It's not just something that looks good in photos.

It's a working tool.

It's the blade that helps prepare a meal after a long day in the mountains. It's the tool you'll reach for when things get difficult. It's something you'll depend on when there are no backups available.
